How to Choose & Replace Steel-Tip Dart Points

Why Dart Points Matter More Than You Might Think

A dart point is easy to overlook — it's small, inexpensive, and easy to replace. But the right point length and style can meaningfully change how your dart feels in the board, how it enters the wire, and how reliably it stays in. This guide covers everything you need to choose wisely and replace points safely.

Point Length: Which Should You Choose?

Steel-tip dart points are typically available in lengths ranging from around 26 mm to 41 mm, with 32 mm and 38 mm being the most popular choices. Here's a practical breakdown:

  • Short points (26–30 mm): Suit heavier barrels or a more upright throwing style. The dart lands closer to the board surface, which can reduce bounce-outs on tightly grouped clusters — but the shorter profile leaves less room for error if your dart drops sharply in flight.
  • Medium points (32–36 mm): The most versatile range. A good starting point for most players, and compatible with the widest variety of barrel styles.
  • Long points (38–45 mm): Work well with front-weighted barrels or players who throw at a lower angle. The extra length helps the dart reach the board face before the barrel interferes with adjacent darts, which is handy in tight finishes.

There's no universal "correct" length. The right choice depends on your barrel weight, throw angle, and how your darts tend to sit in the board. If you're unsure, starting at 32 mm and adjusting from there is a sensible approach.

Swiss Points vs Standard Points: What's the Difference?

This is one of the most common sources of confusion, so let's clear it up.

Standard points are fixed — they're threaded or press-fit permanently into the barrel and require a repointing tool (or a vice and grip) to remove and replace. They are the traditional and most widely compatible format.

Swiss points are a moveable-point system. The point is screwed directly into the front of the barrel using a fine thread, allowing you to swap points by hand — no tools required. When a dart hits the board or a wire, a Swiss point can move slightly rather than transmitting the full force to the barrel, which many players find reduces bounce-outs.

Compatibility: What You Need to Check Before You Buy

This is the critical step that players sometimes skip — and it's worth taking seriously.

Swiss Points

Swiss points use a proprietary thread and are not universally compatible across all barrels. They are designed for barrels that have been specifically machined with a Swiss-point thread at the nose. You cannot fit a Swiss point to a standard barrel, and doing so can permanently damage the barrel. Before purchasing Swiss points, confirm:

  • Your barrel manufacturer explicitly states Swiss-point compatibility
  • The thread specification matches (some manufacturers use slightly different tolerances)
  • You're buying the correct diameter for your barrel

If you're not certain, contact us before ordering — it's a much easier conversation than a damaged barrel.

Standard Points

Standard points are more forgiving but still not a free-for-all. Barrel bores vary in diameter and depth. A point that fits one barrel may be too loose, too tight, or the wrong length for another. Check your barrel manufacturer's specifications, or bring your barrel to a professional repointing service.

When to Use a Repointing Tool — and When Not To

A repointing tool grips the damaged point and pulls it cleanly from the barrel bore. Used correctly, it's quick, reliable, and doesn't risk barrel damage. Here's when it makes sense:

  • You're replacing points regularly and want a repeatable, damage-free method
  • Your barrel bores are tight and the point resists removal
  • You're working with precision barrels where any cosmetic or structural damage matters

Our Repointing Service

If you'd prefer to leave it to someone who does this daily, we offer a professional repointing service. We can assess your barrels, recommend suitable replacement points, and fit them correctly. Visit our Services collection to find out more, or get in touch with any questions.

Quick Safety Checklist Before You Repoint

  • ✅ Confirm your new points are compatible with your barrel specification
  • ✅ Inspect the barrel bore — if it's cracked, deformed, or cross-threaded, don't force new points in
  • ✅ Use the correct tool for the job; improvised tools are the most common cause of barrel damage
  • ✅ If in doubt, ask us — we're here to help, not just to sell

Still Not Sure?

Dart equipment questions are often very specific to your setup. If you've read this and still aren't certain which points suit your barrels — or whether repointing is something you should do yourself — reach out to us directly. We're happy to talk through it before you spend any money.
